It's NOT That Complicated
Chewy.com was purchased by PetSmart. It looks as if it's a game of money for Chew.com and PetSmart.
That probably doesn't add up to a family owned business like Fromm. That's the difference with family owned businesses operating with a specific set of ethics. They could have made big bucks, but at what cost to the moral integrity of the company?
So "Fromm" pulled away from Chewy.com
Who Is Fromm?
"Fromm" is operated by the Nielman family, which is a 5th generation family in this business.
"Fromm" produced dry dog and cat products as well as canned dog and cat products.
Why Does the Chewy.com Pullout matter?
A lot of people may find the convenience of ordering online to be beneficial since they live in rural or remote areas. Ever since the PetSmart buyout, the ethical approach to products offered becomes a big criticism of Chewy.com. They can offer anything any everything under the sun at lower prices than stores. Price is an attempt to sway customers from important independent retailers who often HELP consumers in any way possible when they have pet food related issues.
It must be said that "price" and a company offering the "lowest" price has nothing to do with education, ethics, and the important issues of the pet food industry. Yes, you as a consumer may LOVE that a website offers a product for $5 less than a brick and mortar store. However, many consumers understand the importance that independent retailers play in the pet food industry. They're most often much more educated than normal "big box" stores and they can play an important role in keeping questionable brands at bay. Many independent store owners know all the important details of where foods are manufactured, what ingredients are used, and the quality of those ingredients. They can convey those important details to consumers.
In the situation with "Fromm", it's important that the consumer knows that this is an independent brand run by a family and not a major conglomerate desperate for shelf space. Not all "family" owned companies are the same so it comes down to what information the companies are being transparent about and how that information is translated to the consumers.
When you're ordering through a computer, are you ordering what is advertised to you or are you ordering something where you know the quality of the product, where it's made, and how it's made? On top of that, do you have any type of verification for the sourcing of the ingredients that make up the product?
Does Chewy.com even care about these questions? Or are they just selling anything to make a dollar? (Or millions?) Let's be honest here, this Chewy.com looks to be a business of convenience. There can be better quality companies sold on that website and lower quality companies sold on that website. So what's the ethical approach of Chewy.com and what they're offering when it comes to the topic of nutrition? That's the big, big, big question.
The Chewy.com business model also appears to attempt to undercut independent retailers. Distribution companies get product from the manufacturer into the stores. Chewy.com doesn't have this in place. They appear to act as the distributor and the store. This allows them to offer the product cheaper to the consumer and ship it directly. If they can't get product, they often call stores to try and fulfill orders that they themselves can't fulfill simply to try and keep the customer.
Statement From FROMM Pet Foods
“Loyal Fromm Customers,
As you may or may not be aware Chewy.com was purchased by PetSmart on May 31st 2017.
Fromm Family Foods is a 5th generation family owned-and-operated company with a long history of selling our products exclusively to independent pet retailers. Fromm believes our products are best sold by retailers who know our product and can offer pet parents what’s right for their specific dog or cat. As a result of Chewy’s sale to PetSmart, they are no longer an authorized retailer of Fromm Products.
You can visit www.frommfamily.com/retailers/usa/ to locate a retail store near you or to find the current list of authorized internet retailers.
We appreciate your continued support of our family business.”
Thank you again for contacting us on this very important matter.
Best Sold By retailers who know our products and can offer pet parents with what's right
Many cat and dog parents look for raw, dehydrated, canned or dry cat foods that fit a specific need. No matter what feeding style is being fed, the common themes can't be stressed enough. Where are the products made? How are the products made? In what type of plant are the products made? What is the quality of each ingredient and where are the ingredients sourced from?
Can you even talk to the company?
FRomm Does Indeed Talk
"Fromm" has been contacted and they're happy to answer questions. That's what is needed in the pet food industry no matter what feeding style you choose to feed.
There are pet food companies of all kinds that run like the wind when asked questions. Then there are those who are willing to answer and respond to people with inquiries and questions. It's important for you as a consumer to know if you're dealing with a company that is transparent when it comes to the questions you have.

Dear Pet Lover,
Chewy recently sold their business to PetSmart, and, as a result, ORIJEN and ACANA foods will no longer be available through Chewy.
Like many of you, we are disappointed in Chewy’s decision to sell their business. The ownership change means they no longer meet our definition of pet specialty.
At Champion, our mission is simple: to be trusted by Pet Lovers and the people who serve them. We’ve always stood on principle, we base our decisions on our values, and we will continue to uphold our 25-year commitment to work with specialty shops.
We choose to focus our investment in our foods, including our research, unparalleled ingredients, and world class kitchens.
Our commitment to food is what sets us apart from multinational and marketing brands. We believe this is the reason Pet Lovers choose ORIJEN and ACANA.
We partner exclusively with specialty shops because they:
While it’s too late to reverse the Chewy/PetSmart decision, we have a strong network of pet specialists across America where ORIJEN and ACANA are always on-shelf. Visit ORIJEN and ACANA for a list of brick and online retailers in your area.
